The Guardian, Fiona Beckett - Wine: Local Heros
Wine: Local Heros
Independent wine merchants have a reputation as being expensive. But set preconceptions aside, and there are bargains to be had the equal of any in a supermarket, says Fiona Beckett
Ten Green Bottles is altogether funkier. This shop and wine bar in Brighton supplies restaurants as diverse as The Fat Duck and MsMarmitelover's Underground Restaurant. They specialise in hard-to-find bottles such as biodynamic Saumur producer Domaine de la Paleine's Scherzo 2008 (£10.99; 14% abv), a lovely, off-dry chenin that would add real class to jazzed-up turkey leftovers (creamy or spicy).

The Irish Veteran & Vintage Car Club
In September 26 vintage cars and 52 car enthusiasts from The Irish Veteran & Vintage Car Club visited Gérald at Domaine for a private wine tour & wine tasting.
Pat Meehan from The Irish Veteran & Vintage Car Club writes the following of their experience.
In September our club ran a motoring holiday to the Loire Valley in France a total of twenty six cars and fifty two car enthusiasts. The event was a great success helped in no small way with ten days of glorious weather.
The highlight of the trip was our visit with Gerald Beaumont at Domaine de la Paleine, a vineyard in Le Puy Notre Dame some 20 kms south west of our base in Saumur.
Gerald was most helpful meeting our cars at our hotel where we were staying and leading the party to the Domaine where we all met in a spacious car park prior to our tour of the vineyard.
Geralds expert knowledge of the wine making process was soon evident - from the planting of the vine in the chalky soil of this region to the final bottling, labelling and packaging of the finished product.
He explained the way of allowing grass to grow between the plants to encourage the vine roots to search for water essential for growth of the chenin vines in this vineyard (an area of over 30 hectares).
The wine produced here is of a high quality, described as full bodied and fruity.
The equipment is of the highest modern standard, from the stainless steel vats to the expensive French oak barrels.
We were impressed with the wine cellars running for nearly a mile under the Domaine giving a constant temperature of 12.c.
Modern machines for turning the bottles compared with a hundred year old wine press once operated by a single donkey were well photographed.
The wine tasting was most enjoyable, again Gerald explaining the young to mature varieties produced in this Domaine - red, white, rosé & sparkling.
At the end of a most interesting two hour tour we were pleased to purchase some of this excellent wine.
Our host Gerald Beaumont and the staff were most informative helpful and friendly. A wine tour which we highly recommend.

Ten Green Bottles at the Underground Market
Think of a combination between part 'Come Dine with me', a festival and the atmosphere on a good bbq in the garden and you have the brilliant Underground Market.
Hosted by one of my favourite foodies and all round inspirational bundle of creative energy Ms Marmite - ie Kirsten, it has developed from the idea behind the Underground Restaurant. In its' second form, the stalls were literally in every room except the bathroom, toilet and her daughters room. The quality of the stalls exhibiting was just outstanding - delicious jerk chicken from the Carib Underground, vegan chocolates from Lorraine and heavenly chocolate brownies (chocolate & me are friends!), the Underground Tea Party girls and wine tasting from Ten Green Bottles.

The Drinks Business - Virtual Store Turns Physical
Online-based merchant and supplier Tengreenbottles is branching out by opening its first retail outlet this month.
Based in Brighton, East Sussex, The Wine Shop and Tasting Room will feature more than 200 wines, 90% of which are exclusive to the UK store.
The high proportion of exclusive wines at The Wine Shop & Tasting Room are a result of the wines being sourced directly from the vineyard by the company’s owners.
Founding partner Simon Broad said of the project: “This venture gives us the chance to share our love of wine and food with our customers face-to-face, and to showcase little known gems from some of the forgotten wine regions of the world - alongside old favourites.”
Tengreenbottles, which “prides itself on being able to offer unique products," including "a range of premium spirits,” will also stock Camden Town Brewery’s beers in-store, one of the few microbreweries to make a lager alongside ale.
Customers will be able to buy a bottle to take away or to open and enjoy on-premise, while on weekday evenings the store plans to offer a selection of complimentary crostini with any wine purchase.
The new shop can be found on 9 Jubilee Street, Brighton while Tengreenbottles can be visited on www.tengreenbottles.com

Wine Tasting : Friday 10 September 2010
For those of you in Brighton this Friday, or able to make it down, we'll be holding an informal wine tasting of our current selection of wines by the glass.
The wine tasting is free of charge, just come along between 5.30 and 6.30pm and we'll talk you through the four reds and whites we are serving, why we chose them, and how they fit into our approach to wine.
We'll also be sending out details this week of the first of our more formal wine tasting programmes, including a talk on some of the basics of wine tasting, and a visit from one of our Loire Valley producers to talk us through his range.
We look forward to seeing you at one of the events soon!

Daily Telegraph : 10 Top Wines from 10 Top Independent Wine Sellers
Small wine sellers have a knack for uncovering some gems.
Ten Green Bottles is the new kid on the Brighton block. Hitherto an online merchant only, specialising in French, Italian and Spanish producers too small for the supermarkets, it opens its first shop this week. This is a great value, terroir-expressive red from Abruzzo, full of ripe, savoury red fruit and silky tannins. Ideal to drink with rich pasta dishes.

Ten Green Bottles - Wine Bar & Tasting Rooms
After months of hard work and planning our shared venture of a wine bar with Ten Green Bottles will materialise on 16 August 2010 when Ten Green Bottles Wine Bar & Tasting Rooms will open in Brighton.
The wine bar has evolved greatly since this photograph was taken but it is not my intention to reveal le look just yet.
Sourced from organic and biodynamic wine producers Ten Green Bottles Wine Bar & Tasting Rooms will house an impressive 250 different wine references from across Europe, 80 of which are from France.
Naturally sourcing wine involves tasting wine and in May of this year 'La Bellevue' played host to Sam Devaney and Simon Broad from Ten Green Bottles.
Over a weekend La Bellevue's troglodyte caves were transformed into an impressive salle de dégustation as Gérald, Sam & Simon sampled and decided upon the future wines for the Ten Green Bottles wine bar.
